Tenney, Renton and Varona Villages
Ewa, Hawaii

This brief history of Ewa Plantation Village has been documented by Architect Design Associates.

Hawaii plantation housing is one of the unique architectural styles of the Hawaiian Islands. The homes were built by the sugar plantation owners to house the workers who were imported from Japan, China, and the Philippines. The structures are single wall construction with cedar shingle roofs and pier posts on lava rock foundations. They are now being preserved for their historical value. In 1936 Ewa was a thriving plantation town with eight separate housing villages. Today an ambitious renovation project aims to bring vitality back to the three remaining villages - Tenney, Renton and Verona. In the community that dates back to the 1920's more than 250 historic plantation homes will be renovated and offered for sale at affordable prices to the original residents. The restoration of the historic buildings in addition to new utilities, widen roads and new infrastructure improvements will bring a new life to a community that will preserve the areas unique historic and cultural feel.
